Our Architects’ Favorite 2024 Home Design Trends

These are the Top 10 Home Design Trends Our Austin Architects are Most Excited for in 2024

And just like that, 2023 has come and gone. Last year, we saw a rise in trends like cottage-style architecture, earthy colors, and mixed metal finishes. Now, it’s time to welcome the lineup of 2024 home design trends! Our Austin architects have compiled a list of our top 10, which we think have some real staying power. We’re looking ahead to outdoor-driven home layouts, Art Deco inspired design elements, and niche rooms to house your favorite activities. Let’s dive into the latest trends.

Our Top 2024 Home Design Trends

The 2024 design trends forecast is in! Let’s take a look at the 10 trends we’re already seeing homeowners embrace.

1. Prioritized Outdoor Living Spaces

Indoor-outdoor living is the top priority going into 2024. Homeowners are looking for spaces to relax outside while still enjoying some creature comforts. Here in Austin, we’re working on a few residential architecture projects that feature screened porches. By using transparent screens, you’re able to enjoy the view and not have to worry about any pesky pests. We also love the idea of including upgrades like an outdoor fireplace to keep the porch warm during the winter months. Consider adding a pool or hot tub to the backyard for even more outdoor fun during the summer.

2. Designs for Active Lifestyles

Expanding on designs for outdoor living, our team of Austin architects is also working on residential plans to accommodate more active lifestyles. Our latest designs are moving away from more sedentary spaces like media rooms and toward wellness-focused spaces like at-home yoga studios. Clients are requesting home gyms, outdoor showers, and mudrooms to store items like spotting equipment and bikes.

3. Curved Architectural Elements

Drawing inspiration from the Art Deco style, curved home features are making waves in 2024. Curved design elements like a kitchen island, feature wall, or archway are great ways to complement the straight lines of a home and add additional visual interest — no matter the style.

4. Unique Wall Applications

Plain drywall is out. Unique wall applications are in! Wall treatments, including wallpaper, fluted tambour panels, and zellige tile, are trending because they bring color, pattern, and texture to the space. Wall applications like these are a great way to add visual interest without having to rely on accessories and art. When used strategically, they can help enhance the architectural style of your home.

5. Sculptural Focal Points

In general, our Austin architects are finding that residential homes are becoming more artistic and sculptural because homeowners are willing to take the leap and personalize their spaces. We’re seeing requests for more custom built-ins and decorative installations, like a row of colored tube lights serving as an art piece or a mural wall.

6. Statement Lighting

One way to bring in sculptural elements into your home is through statement lighting. Interesting light choices such as organic-inspired chandeliers, LED light accents, and made-to-order fixtures can draw the eye in and help visually expand the space. Remember, lighting is an art form! So pay attention to how all the fixtures will work together in the space. You’ll want a lighting design that is beautiful and functional.

7. High Tech Bathrooms

Bathrooms are not only becoming more spa-like in 2024, they’re becoming more high tech. Homeowners are adding items such as bidet toilets, remote control showers, and built-in speakers to their bathroom design checklists. Luxuries like these can enhance your morning routine and bring the spa home.

8. Boozy Entertaining Areas

We mentioned earlier that our Austin architects are creating more home spaces for active lifestyles. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room to party too. We’re seeing a rise in decked-out home bar designs. From custom built-ins in the main living area to hidden speakeasy cabinets to entire rooms dedicated to hosting, home bars are making a big comeback in 2024. Why go out when you can host the best party in town?

9. Niche Activity Rooms

While open-concept living plans and flex rooms were popular in past years, we’re seeing a shift to dedicated niche activity rooms. It turns out, homeowners have a lot of hobbies and interests they need extra space for! We’re designing custom rooms to house arcade games, crafting supplies, musical instruments, and board games. Niche rooms allow you to fully embrace your passions without worrying about cleaning them up before company arrives.

10. More Personalized Spaces

From home offices to home arcades, 2024 home design trends are embracing personalization. Homeowners are taking more risks and breaking the mold as they say goodbye to white and gray color palettes and hello to vibrant wallpapers, colorful tiles, and rooms made just for them. After all, it’s your dream home!

The 2024 Trend We Can’t Get Behind

Peachy Color Palettes

While there are plenty of 2024 design trends we love, there is one we just can’t get behind — peachy color palettes. Pantone revealed that the 2024 Color of the Year is Peach Fuzz. Paint, tile, and decor companies have quickly followed through with lines in various shades of peachy pinks and oranges. Our opinion is that this shade feels a little too retro and might not be something most homeowners would keep around for very long. If you want to participate in the trend, we recommend going small with items that can easily be changed, like paint.
